Fossils

Fossils are the remains or traces of ancient living things preserved in rock. They show us how life looked long ago.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

Some fossils are footprints rather than bones.

All about Fossils

A fossil is the preserved remains or traces of something that lived long ago. Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rock. They can be bones, teeth, shells, footprints or even droppings that have turned to stone over millions of years.

Fossils form when a living thing is buried quickly by mud or sand, so soft parts decay but minerals seep in and replace the hard parts. Scientists date fossils by studying the layers of rock where they are found.

Frequently asked questions about Fossils

How are fossils formed?

Usually when an animal or plant is buried quickly, minerals slowly replace its tissues and the remains turn to stone.

Where are fossils usually found?

Mostly in sedimentary rocks like sandstone and shale, which form in layers.

Can you keep a fossil you find?

Take a photo and tell an adult or a museum. Fossils are often protected, and removing them from some sites is illegal.
