Symmetry

A shape is symmetrical if one half is a mirror image of the other. The dividing line is the line of symmetry.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

A butterfly's wings show symmetry.

All about Symmetry

A shape has symmetry when it can be divided into two matching halves. A line of symmetry is the line that divides the shape so one half is a mirror image of the other. Butterfly wings and human faces are roughly symmetrical.

Some shapes have more than one line of symmetry. A square has four, while an irregular shape may have none. Rotational symmetry is when a shape looks the same after being turned less than a full turn.

Real-life uses of Symmetry

  • Designing logos and symbols that are balanced
  • Folding paper to create paper snowflakes or cut-out patterns
  • Creating mirror-image art and reflections

Frequently asked questions about Symmetry

How many lines of symmetry does a circle have?

Infinitely many. Any line through its centre divides the circle into two matching halves.

Does a rectangle have symmetry?

Yes, a rectangle has two lines of symmetry, through the middle of opposite sides.

What is rotational symmetry?

When a shape can be turned less than a full turn and still look the same. A square has rotational symmetry at 90 degrees.
