All about Averages

An average is a single number that describes a typical value in a set of numbers. The most common average is the mean. To find the mean, add up all the values and divide by how many values there are.

The mean of 2, 4 and 6 is 4, because 2 + 4 + 6 = 12 and 12 รท 3 = 4. The median is the middle value when numbers are put in order, and the mode is the value that appears most often.

Frequently asked questions about Averages

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the total divided by the count, the median is the middle value and the mode is the most common value.

How do you find the median of 7, 3, 9, 5?

Put them in order: 3, 5, 7, 9. The middle two are 5 and 7, so the median is 6.

Why is the mean sometimes misleading?

One very large or very small value can change the mean a lot, so the median can give a fairer picture.
