All about Algebra Basics

Algebra uses letters, such as x or n, to stand for unknown numbers. An expression like x + 3 describes a value, and an equation like x + 3 = 10 says two things are equal. Solving the equation means finding the value of the letter that makes it true.

To solve x + 3 = 10, subtract 3 from both sides to get x = 7. Whatever you do to one side of an equation, you must do to the other side to keep it balanced, like a set of scales.
