All about Germs

Germs are tiny living things that can make us ill. The main types are bacteria, viruses, fungi and some parasites. Some germs are helpful, such as the bacteria in your gut, but others cause colds, flu, sore throats and stomach bugs.

Germs spread by touch, sneezes, coughs and dirty surfaces. You can stop them spreading by washing your hands, covering your mouth with a tissue or elbow when you cough, not sharing drink bottles and staying home when you are ill.

Frequently asked questions about Germs

What is the difference between bacteria and viruses?

Bacteria are single-celled living organisms that can often be treated with antibiotics. Viruses are much smaller and need a host cell to multiply, so they cannot be treated with antibiotics.

Are all germs bad?

No. Many bacteria in your body are helpful, and some germs are used to make foods like yoghurt and cheese.

Why do I get sick after a cold?

Your immune system is busy fighting the infection, so you feel tired and run-down until it has cleared.
