Black Holes

A black hole is a place in space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Many form when huge stars collapse.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

Black holes can't be seen directly, but we see their effects.

All about Black Holes

A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape once it passes the event horizon. Many black holes form when very massive stars collapse at the end of their lives.

Black holes cannot be seen directly, but scientists can detect them by watching how they pull nearby stars and gas. Some supermassive black holes sit at the centres of galaxies, including the one in our own Milky Way.

Frequently asked questions about Black Holes

Can black holes swallow Earth?

Not while they stay where they are. Earth orbits the Sun safely, and there is no black hole close enough to threaten it.

What is the event horizon?

The boundary around a black hole beyond which nothing can escape.

Was the first image of a black hole taken?

Yes. In 2019, scientists released the first image of a black hole's shadow in the galaxy M87.
