All about The Invention of Writing

Writing began about 5,000 years ago when people started using pictures and wedge-shaped marks to keep records. In Mesopotamia, the Sumerians used cuneiform on clay tablets. In Egypt, hieroglyphs combined pictures and sounds to write words.

Alphabets later made writing much easier to learn, because each symbol represented a sound rather than a whole word. Writing allowed laws, stories, science and history to be recorded and shared over long distances and across generations.
