Some research submarines can dive thousands of metres.
All about Submarines
A submarine travels underwater by filling and emptying ballast tanks with water. When the tanks are full, the submarine sinks. When they are emptied of water and filled with air, it rises. Propellers and fins control its direction and depth.
Submarines were first used in the 1600s and developed quickly in the 1800s and 1900s. Modern submarines are used for exploring the deep ocean, conducting research and for national defence. Some can stay underwater for months.
