Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton (1642โ€“1727) explained gravity and the laws of motion. He also showed that white light is made of many colours.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact

The story says an apple falling from a tree inspired his idea.

All about Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton (1642โ€“1727) was an English scientist and mathematician who explained how objects move and how gravity works. His book Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, set out the laws of motion and universal gravitation.

Newton showed that white light is made of many colours by passing sunlight through a glass prism. He also helped develop calculus, a branch of maths used today in science, engineering and economics.

  • Explaining why objects fall and planets orbit
  • Designing bridges, cars and rockets with the laws of motion
  • Understanding the colours of light and rainbows

Frequently asked questions about Isaac Newton

What are Newton's three laws of motion?

An object stays still or moves at a steady speed unless a force acts on it, force equals mass times acceleration, and every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Is the apple story true?

Newton said that seeing an apple fall inspired his thinking about gravity, though the story may be exaggerated.

Did Newton invent calculus?

He developed calculus at about the same time as the German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz, and both men are credited.
